Part 5 – Checklists

An overview of CARES Standard Operating Procedures, Part 5, is provided here. A complete copy of the CARES SOP Part 5 is available here.

Part 5 all the checklists CARES members will use during the course of our operations.  These checklists are both operational (what do we do) as well as procedural (how do we do it) in nature.

The following checklists are included in Part 5.

0100  CARES EC Checklist

This checklist addresses the actions that the EC or Shift Supervisor must take during an activation.  The Checklist covers the steps that must be taken (i) before an event, (ii) during an event, and (iii) after an event is over.  It also describes the requirements for completing the Communications Action Plan.

0200 CARES Net Control Station Checklist

This checklist describes the action that the NCS operator must take during an activation.  The Checklist covers the steps that must be taken (i) before an event, (ii) during an event, and (iii) after an event is over.

Specifics within the NCS checklist address establishing the Frequency Guard, polling for prioritized traffic, and managing team health and welfare.

0300 CARES Fire Station checklist

This checklist describes the action that the Field responders should take to set up and operate a field assignment at a city-based Fire Station.  The Checklist covers the steps that must be taken (i) before an event, (ii) during an event, and (iii) after an event is over. 

Maps and other logistical information are part of this checklist and are listed in subsections:

  1. 0301 Cupertino Fire Station 1
  2. 0302 Seven Springs Fire Station 2
  3. 0307 Monta Vista Fire Station 7

0400 CARES EOC Radio Room Checklist

This checklist describes the action that the EOC Radio Room Operator should take to set up and operate at the EOC Radio Room.  The Checklist covers the steps that must be taken (i) before an event, (ii) during an event, and (iii) after an event is over. 

Because of the infrequent use of the EOC equipment, equipment operation checklists are used.  These include:

  1. 0410 Kenwood TM-2530A 2 Meter Transceiver Checklist
  2. 0420 Kenwood TM-742A 2 Meter/440 Transceiver Checklist
  3. 0420 Kenwood TM-401B 440 Transceiver Checklist

0500 CARES EOC Packet Checklist

This checklist describes the action that the EOC Packet system Operator should take to set up and operate packet at the EOC Radio Room.  The Checklist covers the steps that must be taken (i) before an event, (ii) during an event, and (iii) after an event is over.

Power-on and setup instructions for the Radio, TNC, and Computer, as well as connecting to the BBS are covered.  Operating procedures for creating, sending, and receiving packet messages are in development.
